North Korea possibly launched multiple ballistic missiles early on Wednesday local time, with the missiles landing in the sea, NHK reports.
Japan's Coast Guard, reported that North Korea fired "what could be two ballistic missiles," and Japan's Prime Minister's office also confirmed a suspected ballistic missile launch. The projectiles are believed to have fallen into the Sea of Japan, outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone, based on information from Japanese government sources.
On July 18, a U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarine, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, made a port call in South Korea's Busan city. South Korea's Defense Ministry announced the submarine's presence.
These events come amidst increased tensions on the Korean peninsula. Last week, North Korea conducted a test of an advanced long-range missile and threatened to shoot down U.S. military reconnaissance aircraft engaged in activities it deemed "hostile espionage" near its territory.
Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, expressed concern that the deployment of a U.S. ballistic missile submarine to the peninsula would further strain communication between the two sides.
In addition, South Korea and the U.S. held their first Nuclear Consultative Group meeting in Seoul on Tuesday. This joint panel was established by the two countries' leaders during a summit in Washington in April.
