Starting January 1, 2024, a pilot project will be implemented to place 17-year-old boys on military registration in Kazakhstan automatically, media reports.
The initiative was supported by the Prime Minister, interested state bodies, capital's executive bodies, cities of republican significance, and regions, according to the Ministry of Defense's press service.
The ministry mentioned that the implementation was made possible by modifying and integrating information systems of state bodies, resulting in full coverage of the military registration of male citizens aged 16 to 60.
Reportedly, Kazakhstan's military strength has been ranked 63rd out of 145 countries in the Global Firepower Index. The country has an index of 1.0873, indicating moderate military might.
The rankings were determined by experts who evaluated 60 factors such as defense spending, equipment arsenal, number of tanks, ships, aircraft, and access to resources that impact military efficiency. The presence of nuclear weapons was not considered in the evaluation.
The United States, Russia, and China are the top three countries with the highest military power, while Bhutan ranks last.
Among the post-USSR countries, Kazakhstan's defense budget of $2.6bn is higher than Belarus's ($723.1mn) and Uzbekistan's ($692.5mn) but lower than Russia's ($82.6bn), Ukraine's ($30bn), and Azerbaijan ($3.1bn).
