US President Joe Biden made a visit to Finland, NATO's newest member, where he expressed his views on the war in Ukraine and reiterated the US commitment to NATO and Finland's security, DW reports.
Speaking alongside Finnish President Sauli Niinisto in Helsinki, Biden stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin has "already lost the war" in Ukraine due to resource shortages and economic difficulties. He emphasized that Ukraine will eventually join NATO, but no country can become a member while a war is ongoing. Biden also addressed the detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in Russia, stating that efforts are underway for a prisoner exchange.
After attending a NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, Biden held a mini-summit with the leaders of other Nordic countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in security, climate policy, and technology. Biden welcomed Sweden's prospective entry into NATO following Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's withdrawal of objections. Finland's NATO membership, which began in April, was highlighted as a significant step in strengthening the alliance and enhancing security in the region.
During the meetings, Biden emphasized the need for collective action to address the climate crisis and praised the Nordic countries for their leadership in this area. He called for close collaboration in tackling the existential threat of climate change, noting the US's crucial role in the fight against climate change and expressing optimism about the potential for progress with international cooperation.
