The Kuwaiti government has announced plans to print and distribute 100,000 copies of the Quran in Swedish in response to a provocative incident of Quran burning in Stockholm last month on the day of Eid al-Adha, Middle East has reported.
The decision was made by the Council of Ministers during its weekly meeting upon the initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah who assigned the Public Authority for Public Order to print and publish copies of the Quran.
According to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), this step was taken as a means of "affirming tolerance toward the Islamic religion and spreading Islamic values and coexistence among all people."
It is expected that the translated copies of the Quran will be completed soon and distributed to mosques, libraries, schools, and other institutions throughout Sweden in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The translation work was done by the late Knut Bernström, a well-known Swedish translator who converted to Islam.
Kuwait was among many Muslim-majority and Arab states that condemned the Quran burning incident, which was allowed by Swedish authorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that "this serious provocative action offends Muslims around the world."
"The State of Kuwait reminds the international community and all interested states of their responsibility for actions against hatred and religious extremism and the cessation of hostile acts directed against the sanctity of Muslims. Those responsible for such hostile acts must be held accountable and prevented from using the principle of freedom as a pretext to justify hostility towards Islam or any other holy faith" the ministry added.
Earlier, Kuwait participated in preparing a draft resolution, in collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to be presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to combat religious hatred and desecration of religious sanctities.
