Microsoft has revealed that Chinese state-linked hackers have gained unauthorized access to email accounts in approximately 25 organizations, including government agencies, DW reports.
While Microsoft did not disclose the affected organizations or governments, it specified that the hacking group, known as Storm-0558, primarily targets entities in Western Europe. The breach involved the forging of digital authentication tokens to access webmail accounts on Microsoft's Outlook service.
The activity began in May and was detected after customers reported abnormal mail activity. The Washington Post reported that Storm-0558 also breached unclassified US government email accounts, although the US managed to prevent further breaches. In response, China has dismissed the allegations as "disinformation," accusing the US of being the world's largest hacker empire and diverting attention from its own cyber activities.
Chinese cybersecurity organizations have previously exposed cyberattacks by the US government, but the US has not responded. Recent reports have also implicated state-backed Chinese hackers in various cyber intrusions, including targeting US critical infrastructure and potentially disrupting communications during future crises.
