South Korea celebrates the birth of its first twin panda cubs as a giant panda at Everland Resort Zoo gave birth to the adorable pair, CNN reports.
The female cubs, weighing 180 grams and 140 grams, were born on July 7, making their arrival a rare occurrence as pandas have less than a 50% chance of giving birth to twins. In the wild, twin pandas face challenges as mothers typically focus on caring for only one cub. Both the mother, Ai Bao, and her newborns are in good health, receiving postpartum care from experienced staff who helped Ai Bao deliver her first cub three years ago.
The birth of the twin pandas is a significant milestone for South Korea, with Kang Cheol-won, a zookeeper, expressing happiness and a commitment to their well-being. The pandas' parents, Ai Bao, and father Le Bao, were loaned to South Korea in 2016 as part of "panda diplomacy" efforts by China. This cooperation between the two countries has led to the successful birth of the first locally-born panda, Fu Bao, in 2020. The new twins are yet to be named.
Giant pandas, known for their bamboo diet, are considered a national treasure in China. With a population of around 1,800 pandas remaining in the wild, mostly in China's Sichuan mountains, efforts to protect and conserve these beloved animals are crucial. Given the challenges of pandas' limited mating periods and solitary nature, the zoo carefully monitored hormonal changes and observed the mother's behavior to ensure the best chance of successful breeding.
The birth of the twin pandas is seen as another significant achievement in the ongoing collaboration between South Korea and China in panda research. It brings joy and hope to the public, and the adorable cubs are expected to capture the hearts of visitors in the years to come.
