The Russian side has agreed that Turkmenistan should join the agreement on the International Transport corridor (ITC) "North-South". The corresponding order was signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the TASS agency reports.
The intergovernmental agreement on the creation of the North-South corridor was signed by Russia, Iran and India in 2000. Since then, more than ten states have joined the document.
Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdumuhamedov previously expressed readiness to join the ITC, saying that the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway road, launched in 2014, could potentially become a link.
According to experts, the distance of freight transport via this route is reduced by more than half compared to the sea route through the Suez Canal.
"North-South" includes three directions.
The first route runs along the western coast of the Caspian Sea through Dagestan (Russia), Azerbaijan and Iran with access to the Persian Gulf ports, India, Pakistan, South-East Asia and Africa. These are currently the main export markets.
The second route is maritime and provides a link between the ports of the five Caspian Sea states. The third route runs along the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea from Russia through Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan with access to Iran.
