A Delegation from Turkmenistan took part in the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) high-level conference on climate change in Vienna, the Turkmenistan's embassy in Austria reports.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Chariyar Chetiev told the forum about his country's priorities in this area, including:
Improving hydrometeorological observations of weather and climate change on the territory of Turkmenistan;
Development and implementation of measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change;
Implementation of measures to save fuel and energy resources and stabilise greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 through the use of energy-efficient and resource-saving technologies;
Increasing the level of international co-operation in the field of climate change control measures.
Turkmenistan is one of the key energy suppliers in the region - counrty supplies its gas to China and a some of CIS countries.
Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov recently ordered the creation of an Interindustry Commission on Methane Emissions Reduction.
This will allow the government to monitor the effectiveness of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, primarily methane, in various sectors of the economy, the decree said.
Ashgabat is considering joining the Global Methane Pledge. Methane is a threat to the climate 80 times more potent than CO2.
