Poland has apprehended another individual linked to a Russian spy network, making it a total of 15 people detained in the ongoing investigation, Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski says.
Poland, serving as a critical hub for Western military aid to Ukraine, claims to be a prime target for Russian espionage, with accusations of Moscow's attempts to destabilize the country. Minister Kaminski announced on Twitter that the suspect, who was systematically paid by Russian intelligence, was involved in surveillance activities targeting military facilities and seaports.
The Russian embassy in Warsaw has not yet responded to this latest development. The individual in custody is identified as a Ukrainian citizen who had been residing in Poland since 2019. Prosecutors have stated that if found guilty, he could face a prison sentence of up to 10 years. The suspect will be held in pre-trial detention.
This incident follows the detention of a Russian professional ice hockey player in June on charges of espionage. Russia had previously demanded an explanation from Poland regarding the arrest of its citizens. In March, Poland reported the dismantling of a Russian espionage network, resulting in the apprehension of nine individuals accused of planning acts of sabotage and monitoring rail routes to Ukraine.
The following month, Poland implemented a 200-meter exclusion zone around its Swinoujscie Liquefied Natural Gas terminal due to concerns over Russian espionage.
Prosecutors have indicated that there may be further arrests in connection with this investigation. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between Poland and Russia and the continued efforts to counter alleged Russian intelligence activities within Polish territory.
