Head of the National Security Committee, Kamchybek Tashiev, strongly criticized the institution of matronymics in Kyrgyzstan. He expressed his disagreement in a Facebook post, stating, "No matronymics."
According to Tashiev, the Constitutional Court should overturn its decision to establish the institution of matronymics in Kyrgyzstan. The Secretary of State of the Kyrgyz Republic, Suyunbek Kasmambetov, and the country's Chief Mufti, Zamir Rakiev, also voiced their disagreement with the decision.
Previously, activist Altyn Kapalova filed a petition with the Constitutional Court regarding matronymics and published the court's decision on social media.
Prior to this, Kyrgyzstan did not have the institution of matronymics, which deprived citizens of the opportunity to choose. This violated the principles of equality and the prohibition of gender discrimination.
Following Kapalova's case, the judicial authorities allowed Kyrgyz citizens who have reached the age of 16 to choose between patronymics and matronymics.
The corresponding changes will be incorporated into the current legal regulations.
"The decision is final, non-appealable, and binding on all state bodies and organizations," stated the response from the Constitutional Court.
