Macron Calls for Independent European Defense System, Euronews reports. During a conference in Paris on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated the need for an independent European defense system. He emphasized the importance of developing a strategy to protect European airspace, aiming to reduce reliance on the United States.
"We need to understand the threats and identify what we, as Europeans, are capable of producing and what we need to purchase," stated Macron.
However, he cautioned against hastily acquiring everything available on the market. Discussions at the conference revolved around anti-drone systems and missile defense systems. Participants highlighted the effectiveness and strategic significance of such equipment, particularly in light of Russia's military intervention in Ukraine. Nuclear deterrence was also on the agenda.
The meeting was attended by diplomats from Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, as well as neighboring countries to Ukraine such as Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. Representatives from NATO and the European Union were also present.
