NATO member states should reduce their dependence on Chinese imports and avoid selling innovative technology to China, says NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
"We must end our reliance on authoritarian regimes," Stoltenberg stated at the Federation of German Industries' Day of Industry on June 19. "We must not rely solely on China for critical raw materials and finished goods. We shouldn't export technology that might be used against us, or we risk losing control of essential infrastructure, such as 5G networks," he stressed.
NATO, according to Stoltenberg, "will continue to trade and engage with China." "But, at the same time, we must avoid dependencies that make us vulnerable," he said.
The NATO Secretary-General urged member countries and private enterprises to collaborate to reduce their reliance on China.
