In a recent escalation of tensions, Armenia and Azerbaijan have accused each other of initiating a firefight along their shared border. The incident involved the alleged targeting of a metallurgical plant under construction in the village of Yeraskh, according to Armenia, while Azerbaijan claims that the Armenian military shelled a village in the Nakhichevan region.
The Ministry of Defense of Armenia released a statement asserting that the Azerbaijani military opened fire on the metallurgical plant at 1:25 p.m. local time. The plant, being built with the support of foreign investment, was reportedly subjected to gunfire from various caliber firearms. As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or damage resulting from the incident.
Responding to the accusations, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan stated that at around 1:35 p.m., the Armenian military initiated an attack on the positions of the Azerbaijani army in the direction of the Hyderabad settlement in the Sadarak region of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic.
“Military units of the Azerbaijani army took appropriate measures in response to this incident," the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The recent border clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan come just weeks after a ceasefire violation was reported on May 31, 2023, in the Mardakert region of Nagorno-Karabakh. A violation of the ceasefire regime at that time was noted in the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping forces which further implicated the hostility between both nations.
