The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) values its partnership with Uzbekistan in advancing nuclear safety in the country, media reports.
During an event celebrating the successful completion of the COMPASS program's pilot phase, Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director-General of the IAEA, expressed his appreciation for Uzbekistan's cooperation.
He also shared details of the program's achievements in the country, emphasizing how it has enhanced transparency and trust in the verification process by facilitating secure data exchange between the IAEA and Uzbekistan.
During the event, Uzbekistan was awarded a certificate by the IAEA for successfully completing the pilot phase of the COMPASS program. Launched in 2020, COMPASS is an IAEA initiative that collaborates with countries to improve the effectiveness of their national authority in charge of implementing safeguards (SRA) as well as their respective system for managing and regulating nuclear material (SSAC).
Rafael Mariano Grossi has over 35 years of experience in disarmament and non-proliferation. He became the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency in December 2019. Grossi was previously Argentina's Ambassador to Austria and its representative to the IAEA. He holds a Ph.D. in International Relations and numerous national awards. Grossi is a strong advocate of gender balance in the nuclear field.
