In a recent meeting with the head of the Central Election Commission, Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus, made a statement asserting that the upcoming elections in his country would be conducted fairly, unlike what he claimed had occurred in the United States, BelTA reported.
During the meeting, the issue of inviting observers for the 2024 election was discussed. Lukashenko emphasized that Belarus has nothing to hide and that organizations designated by law would be invited to observe the electoral process. He expressed the desire for international observers to witness how elections are conducted in Belarus, contrasting them with what he alleged were flawed elections in the United States.
The Belarusian leader specifically referred to controversies surrounding mail-in voting in the United States and claimed that fraud had taken place. He sought to assure observers that Belarus would uphold the integrity of its electoral system
"We see it. We must hold elections honestly" he stated.
Lukashenko further highlighted the perceived support he has among Belarusian voters.
“Today, about 80% (of voters) unconditionally support the direction we have set. Why should we be afraid? Well, we will still fight for the 20% who hesitate and oppose. I say this as the president" he noted.
As per BelTA, the 2024 elections in Belarus will be significant, as it will be the first time the country holds a single voting day. This change aims to shape not only the composition of parliament but also enable citizens to elect deputies to local councils at various levels. The updated Constitution of Belarus establishes the last Sunday of February as the date for the single voting day, with the first occurrence scheduled for February 25, 2024.
