Petr Pavel, the President of the Czech Republic and former NATO advisor, stated that NATO troops will not be permitted to enter Ukraine, providing an explanation for this decision, UNIAN reports.
When asked about the possibility of Western troops being deployed in Ukraine, Pavel expressed his belief that there would be no changes in this matter. He further elaborated that member countries of the alliance perceive a high risk of a nuclear strike from Russia in such a scenario.
Pavel emphasized that the timing of NATO troops joining the conflict, whether at the beginning or later, holds no legal significance. Irrespective of which country or group of countries becomes involved in the conflict, it would signify NATO's engagement in a war against Russia. He voiced his doubt that any politician would desire such a war, as it might prompt Moscow to consider the use of nuclear weapons, which they have previously mentioned. Therefore, he believes that any sensible politician would likely reject such an option.
In other developments, Ukraine submitted an application to join the North Atlantic Alliance in 2022. The upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius is anticipated to address Ukraine's membership and provide security guarantees. The Office of the President of Ukraine has reported that Ukraine's bid for membership is already supported by 20 out of 31 NATO member states.
