Following call to action voiced on May 29 and the promise of ‘nuclear weapons for everyone’, rumor began to circulate of Belarus leader Lukashenko's hospitalization due to possible poisoning. Just last week Lukashenko appeared on state TV insisting that he was “not going to die”.
68-year-old Alexander Lukashenko is reportedly in "critical condition" in a hospital in Moscow after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to opposition leader and 2020 candidate for president Valery Tsepkalo. Tsepkalo acknowledges that his claims are “subject to further confirmation”, he asserted that Lukashenko was "urgently transported to Moscow's Central Clinical Hospital after his closed-door meeting with Putin."
Considering that the Belarusian president's wealth fare has been under speculation since his appearance at Victory Day on May 9, the Tsepkalo’s claims cannot, at this time be taken seriously. Lukashenko attended the celebrations in Moscow’s Red Square with a bandage on his right hand and appearing wobbly on his feet and he was unable to attend Mr. Putin's luncheon.
The leader of Belarus did not speak at the annual celebration of National Flag, Emblem, and Anthem Day that took place, later on, that week; instead, his prime minister issued a statement on his behalf.
Rumor’s and speculation regarding Putin and his regime’s fondness of poisoning their opposition have been in circulation for many years and this could be Tsepkalo’s way of delegitimizing both Putin and Lukashenko’s rule.
