Farah Karimi, the head of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly delegation, shared her perspective on the challenging situation in Turkey and emphasized that despite the high voter turnout, it is crucial to recognize that voters had a choice between various political alternatives.
She highlighted that in such circumstances, it would be shortsighted to definitively claim whether the elections were fair or free.
Karimi stated that there is still a lack of transparency and communication, and the absence of regulations in certain aspects of the second round of elections did not ensure a legally sound process. She also drew attention to the concerns raised by the OSCE regarding biased media coverage and limited access to media for the opposition.
According to Ahmet Jener, the chairman of the Turkish High Election Commission, Recep Tayyip Erdogan secured victory in the second round of presidential elections in Turkey with over 52% of the votes, while his opposition contender Kemal Kilicdaroglu received nearly 48% of the votes. The final official election results are expected to be announced no earlier than June 1st.
