Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the opposition candidate for the presidency of Turkey, has expressed his intention to expel millions of refugees from the country if he is elected, CNN Turk reports.
The politician stated, "If elected, I will send all refugees back to their country."
He claimed that there are approximately 10mn refugees in Turkey and voiced concerns that allowing them to stay would result in an influx of more than 10mn additional settlers. Kilicdaroglu argued that such a scenario would lead to a significant rise in the dollar exchange rate, reaching 30 Turkish lira (currently one dollar equals 19.7 lira).
Regarding the elections, the presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Turkey on May 14. In the first round, Recep Tayyip Erdogan received 49.51% of the votes, while Kilicdaroglu obtained 44.88%. Since a candidate needs over 50% of the vote to win in the first round, a second round of voting will be conducted on May 28.
The Central Election Commission of Turkey reported a turnout of 88.92% in the May 14 election, and it is anticipated that there will be a high voter turnout for the second round of voting, according to observers.
