A recent Committee on Sanitary and Epidemiological Well-being and Public Health report revealed that 107 Uzbek citizens have suffered from food poisoning since early 2023, resulting in two deaths, media reports. There were 21 recorded cases of poisoning, indicating a significant number of people were affected, including 22 children.
Food infection was the leading cause of poisoning, affecting 55 people in six separate cases, including 11 children. This was due to the consumption of fast food items like burgers and fast-food made of pita bread from restaurants and cafes that did not follow proper food handling techniques and used low-quality ingredients. As a result, many experienced gastrointestinal disorders and food poisoning.
Home-prepared preserves were the second leading cause of poisoning, with 15 cases and 52 people diagnosed with "botulism," including eight children.
In the previous year, there were 65 cases of food poisoning in the Central Asian country, affecting 518 people (including two deaths), with 194 children affected. Eating infections (28 cases) and botulism (36 cases) were the leading causes of poisoning.
Authorities seized over 5mn kg of low-quality food products from markets and stores in the previous year, and over 147,000 kilograms have been seized in the first four months of 2023 to ensure public safety and prevent further instances of food poisoning caused by the consumption of low-quality food.
