Since early 2023, Kazakhstan has initiated criminal liability against 16 human trafficking cases, including 12 baby sale cases. In addition, the government has shut down 40 brothels over one year, media reports. Over 100 related crimes are recorded in the Central Asian country yearly, counting forced labor and begging.
With this in mind, deputies of the Majilis designed a bill on combatting human trafficking, taking into account the experience of the USA, Austria, and Finland.
Shenar Kucherbayeva, Deputy Head of the Department for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, noted that in recent years the government blocked the transportation channels of Kazakh nationals to Turkiye, South Korea, and the Kingdom of Bahrain.
