A Tajik military serviceman was killed during a shootout with a group of eight smugglers on the night of April 28, press service of the "Khorug" border detachment of the State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan reports.
The smugglers were attempting to cross the border from Afghanistan to Tajikistan with a large quantity of narcotics, weapons, and ammunition. They refused to surrender when ordered to do so by the Tajik border guards and opened fire.
They were able to escape to Afghanistan, leaving behind their drugs, weapons, and ammunition. Three Tajik citizens were arrested at the scene, and 45kg of heroin, four Kalashnikov assault rifles, 74 cartridges, a night vision device, and $10,000 were seized. The deceased soldier was reportedly Komron Rajabzoda, head of the Khorug city department of the State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan, according to "Ozodi" radio.
Earlier, Tajik security forces had killed two armed militants who were attempting to cross illegally from Afghanistan to Tajikistan and were planning a terrorist attack on Tajikistan's territory, according to the Ministry of Defense.
