Israeli foreign minister Eli Cohen heading to Turkmenistan will meet with President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, and the Jewish community.
Cohen will fly from Azerbaijan to Turkmenistan on Wednesday night, becoming the first Israeli minister to visit the central Asian state in nearly three decades, The Times of Israel reported on April 19.
Then-foreign minister Shimon Peres visited the gas-rich country in 1994, three years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, which had ruled the area.
Cohen will inaugurate Israel’s embassy in Ashgabat. Israel has had an ambassador in Turkmenistan for a decade, but he has worked out of hotels and a temporary office.
Daryo previously wrote that the country's new ambassador, Ishmael Khaldi, 51, recently presented his credentials to Berdimuhamedov. He had earlier worked in the US, Britain, and Eritrea and is the first Bedouin diplomat in a Jewish state.
