Students at the Miraj girls' school in Iran's Kurdistan region were exposed to chemical gas and poisoned, Anadolu reports.
At least 47 girls were injured, and 20 of them are in critical condition. Iranian officials have not yet commented on the incident.
In response, the parents of the affected girls removed the Iranian flag from the school and protested against Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, resulting in clashes with law enforcement.
This incident is part of a growing trend in Iran of mass poisoning of schoolgirls as a means of preventing them from attending school. Authorities have arrested 110 individuals in connection with the poisonings, while sources suggest that these girls were targeted for their involvement in anti-government protests.
According to a doctor specializing in poison treatment, the cause of the poisoning is likely weak organophosphorus, with the aim of terrorizing protesters and exacting revenge on schoolgirls who participated in recent demonstrations.
Meanwhile, President Ibrahim Raisi accused Tehran's enemies of being behind the poisoning of hundreds of schoolgirls.
