Legal Services Clinic, an advocacy group for U.S. veterans, reportedly sued the U.S. Department of Defense on April 10 over concerns of toxic exposure at Uzbekistan airbase, AP news reports. The lawsuit claims that dangerous conditions at the airbase may have caused cancer and other illnesses among U.S. military troops who were stationed there between 2001-2005.
The lawsuit was originally filed on April 3 in Connecticut court. The officials are accused of hiding information about "hazardous" materials such as chemical weapons and uranium on the Karshi-Khanabad Airbase.
At least 15,800 military members served at the airbase in the reported period and the lawsuit claims that a higher number of people fell ill and died at the airbase compared to normal rates. The group has requested to access information about toxic materials.
A spokesperson for the Department of Defense reportedly did not comment on allegations because “the issue requires litigation.”
