The Institute of Macroeconomic and Territorial Studies analyzed Uzbekistan's banana imports between 2017 and 2022 and revealed an increase of 140,200 tons in imports of this fruit, the Institute's press service informs.
In 2020, banana imports decreased by 7% due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the government's decision to reduce import duties to zero stimulated the growth of imports in the following years. Consequently, in 2022, the volume of banana imports increased by 1.6 times compared to the previous year, reaching 140,200 tons.
The zero customs rate for banana imports has been in force since October 2021 and will continue until January 1, 2024.
Many countries impose an import tariff on bananas, but Uzbekistan's policy has indirect health advantages as bananas have many health benefits, including improving diabetes control, aiding digestion, weight loss, stabilizing blood pressure, and wound healing. Earlier, EU countries became the main market for Ecuadorian bananas in January.
