The tenth annual edition of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) was published on March 14. According to the 2023 GTI, Afghanistan ranks first in the ranking in terms of the number of deaths for the fourth year in a row.
The index is calculated on the basis of data on the number of terrorist attacks and casualties since 2007. According to GTI, the worst terrorist situation is in Afghanistan, where 633 terrorist attacks were recorded in the country. Some 63 percent of attacks and 74 percent of deaths occurred along the border with Pakistan.
The situation in Central Asia was assessed positively. Uzbekistan was placed 70th (93rd in 2022), followed by Tajikistan (50). Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan shared the 93rd place.
After the "Taliban" took over Afghanistan, ISIS became the "most active terrorist group" and killed 422 people in 2022. About 67 percent of terrorism-related deaths are linked to ISIS.
For reference, Uzbekistan ranked 125th in this index in 2016, and 132nd in 2019.
