Russian companies have hired hundreds of migrants from Central Asia to work in occupied Ukrainian territories, reports Fokus.ua.
Migrants collect the corpses of Russian soldiers, dig trenches, and repair buildings destroyed by hostilities. The governments of the Central Asian countries have repeatedly warned their citizens not to go to Ukraine, and Ukraine has emphasized that it considers them to be accomplices of the invaders.
A Kyrgyz immigrant named Urmat said that he signed a contract with a Russian company. Under the terms of the document, the man will receive $120 a day to collect the bodies of dead Russian soldiers. He said he was aware of the dangers associated with such work and noted that he had discussed this topic with other Kyrgyz immigrants.
“They told me that sometimes they get shot and that people get killed. They do this job because they are desperate – some of them have debts,” the Kyrgyz migrant said.
Most of the labor migrants work in the cities destroyed by military operations, in particular, in construction sites in Mariupol. Women also go to work in Ukraine. They were offered to work in military hospitals, canteens, and factories in the occupied territories in the east.
The main incentive for migrants involved in these jobs is reported to be money. They are offered salaries ranging from $2,000 to $3,300 a month, which is much higher than workers can earn in Russia. Some workers receive from $700 to $1200.
A man named Sorbon from Tajikistan said that work in Ukraine is advertised on websites, Telegram groups, and on other social networks. They also reportedly learn about vacancies through their employers and word of mouth.
