Gazprom's potential supplies to China in transit through Central Asian states could amount to up to 20 billion cubic meters of gas per year, analysts at the Energy Development Center said.
"We expect that Gazprom will reach a supply agreement of 10 billion cubic meters of gas to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, of which 4-6 billion cubic meters will be transit gas for China. In our estimates, the reconstruction of a such gas pipeline with 20-25 billion cubic meter volume may take about a year," said the report.
Another 10 billion cubic meters can be exported to China through the gas transportation system of Uzbekistan, which is connected to the gas pipeline Central Asia - China. The prospect of these routes for "Gazprom" is that export contracts with China already exist, and the infrastructure has been built, analysts say.
One of the obstacles to this plan is the current state of the "Central Asia-Center" gas pipeline, which was built in the 1960s and may require additional investment to upgrade. In addition, Kazakhstan is likely to try to tie Gazprom's access to its gas transmission capacity, reaching an ultra-low price for gas imported from Russia, analysts conclude.
