Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Thursday (January 19) outlined measures to improve the energy supply in the republic.
'In particular, 27 projects worth $500mn were executed in the hydropower sector, and additional 260-megawatt capacities were designed in recent years. As a result, the total capacity of the stations in the 'Uzbekhydroenergo' system has exceeded 2,000 megawatts. This means two bn cubic meters of natural gas are saved annually. In 2023, 7 projects with a capacity of 197 megawatts and ten micro hydropower plants are set to be commissioned. In addition, the press service says that the work on constructing eight promising projects with a capacity of 438 megawatts and 50 micro hydroelectric power stations is set to begin.
Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev spotlighted the high potential of hydropower and instructed the responsible persons to increase its capacity sharply.
‘250 areas where micro hydropower stations can be built have been identified. Following the estimates, these facilities would produce 675mn kilowatt-hours of electric power per year and save 200mn cubic meters of gas.,' the message reads.
It was instructed to erect hybrid stations adapted to wind and solar energy in vacant areas around hydropower facilities as the costs will be low due to the ready-made infrastructure. Besides, 'Suvsanoatmash' JSC was commissioned to manufacture micro hydropower equipment and hydro aggregates in the Tashkent region.
Particular attention was drawn to digitalizing water reservoir management and boosting personnel qualifications.
Amid energy shortage, the tasks of increasing daily production, fair and efficient distribution of resources, consistent delivery to places, and quick elimination of interruptions were defined.
