Uzbekistan's authorities intend to construct a new tourism center in the heart of Bukhara in 2023. With this in mind, all facilities around the axis of Ibrahim Mominov and Mustaqillik street are set to be demolished, including a large sports complex in the city center. The tourism center is set to be erected in an area of 33 hectares. This would be implemented by allocating 517bn UZS from the budget of the Bukhara region. The news caused discontent among Bukhara residents on January 13, forcing them to send an appeal to the President.
The Minister of Construction and Housing and Communal Services of Uzbekistan Botir Zakirov explained this situation in a brief interview with the Daryo reporter. According to the head of the governmental department, the project proposal will be put up for public discussion once it is ready.
'A special presentation will be given to the residents of Bukhara. At the moment, studies are being conducted. This does not mean that the breakdown will start soon, the final point has not yet been made. This is now a project proposal, there is still a phase of an agreement with UNESCO', the Minister said.
'If the buildings and structures located in the center are demolished or moved to another place, the business entity that won the project competition will build a place in its place or pay compensation under the established procedure. The project and construction work will take at least two years,' the Minister added.
The working group chaired by the Minister is scheduled to explain the center project to the mass media and the population in Bukhara.
