The Uffizi Gallery, a prominent art museum in the Historic Centre of Florence, Italy, is set to showcase the collection of the State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Karakalpakstan named after Igor Savitsky in 2024, under the memorandum between the gallery and The Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF) of the Republic of Uzbekistan. According to the Executive Director of ACDF, this will help promote the Uzbek culture abroad.
A delegation from the Uffizi Gallery visited several state museums and other institutions in Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, and Nukus during a five-day visit, including the Savitsky Museum.
‘I am really excited and astonished by the unique collection of the Savitsky State Museum. This has become a great discovery for me personally and for experts. I can congratulate you all for having such treasures. And it is not only the wealth of the museum but also the variety of works of art represented in it thanks to Igor Savitsky’, Eike Dieter Schmidt, the director of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence said.
The Nukus Museum of Art was established in 1966 at the behest of Igor Savitsky, who became the museum’s first curator. Initially, the museum exhibited archaeological finds from Karakalpakstan, including from the Khorezm Fortresses; copies of classical antiquities; and folk art from Karakalpakstan. The majority of exhibits were collected personally by Savitsky.
Erected in 1581 Uffizi Gallery is home to masterpieces by some of the greatest artists of all time, including Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, among others. The Uffizi sees over 1 million visitors annually.
