Bangladesh's first metro began commercial operations Wednesday (December 28), setting a milestone in the country's transportation history.
The country's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Mass Rapid Transit Line-6 of the metro rail from Dhaka's Uttara to the Agargaon area.
Bangladeshi state-owned Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited is behind the 20.1-km metro, with work carried out by Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Indian and Bangladeshi companies. The metro will eventually cover large parts of the city.
