The official spokesman of Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry commented on media reports on the detention of seven Uzbek citizens in Gomez-Palacio, Mexico, informing that the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Washington promptly held talks with the Embassy of Mexico in the United States, the National Institute of Migration, and other institutions.
‘All compatriots have been released and placed in the Temporary Detention Centre for Foreign Citizens. There is no threat to their lives. All citizens have been identified. The Mexican partners are working to provide Uzbek citizens with consular and legal assistance’, the statement says.
Milenio earlier reported that a group of individuals detained five men, a woman, and one underage citizen in a bid to demand ransom for their release. This has come to light through a 911 call. They reportedly boarded a bus to Mexico City to travel to Baja California and stopped at a house in Gomez Palacio where they were detained by unknown persons who demanded $1,200.
