The Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan has provided a report on coal production and its consumption from January-July 2022.
Overall, the industry provided 3.5 million tons of coal, an increase of 9.1%.
According to the document:
The coal industry mined and delivered 2.7 million tons to thermal power plants, 476,000 tons to the public sector and 108,000 tons of local coal sold through the stock market.
In addition, 145,000 tons of coal were used for public consumption. A total of 882,000 tons of domestic coal is slated to be delivered during the season.
According to the calculations of the International Energy Agency (IEA), the continuous use of coal in the energy sector should be reduced by 55% by 2030 and ultimately stopped by 2040.
Ending coal-fired power generation would prevent 14.5 million premature deaths from air pollution by 2050 and generate up to $16.3 trillion in economic benefits.
According to a new study by the International Institute for Sustainable Development, it is impossible to end oil, gas and coal production by 2050.
Air pollution is a leading cause of health complications worldwide, with 1 in 9 deaths attributable to poor air quality. About 6.7 million deaths were observed in 2019 from harmful air.
Reducing the use of coal offers an incredible opportunity to improve air quality.
Coal-fired power plants contribute to this problem by emitting pollutants such as primary particulate matter, such as PM2.5, as well as secondary particulate matter, such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.
These microparticles pass through the lung barrier and enter the blood system. After that, it can have a negative effect on the cardiovascular system and directly cause respiratory diseases.
