On June 27, The State Security Service of Uzbekistan invited the media representatives to burn explicitly 1933 kg and 695 g of narcotic drugs, ‘Daryo’ special correspondent reports.
Sherzod Arabov, head of the international department at the National Information and Analysis Center for Drug Control under the Cabinet of Ministers, said the situation in the region remained complicated.
“Drug abuse remains serious in our country and in the region as a whole. One of the reasons for this is the proliferation of new types of synthetic drugs and new types of psychoactive substances in recent years. The situation is further complicated by the fact that such substances are widely promoted and circulated on the Internet - darknet. Uzbekistan is also a transit country for one of the global drug trafficking routes along the northern corridor due to its geographical location and developed transport infrastructure. In this regard, law enforcement agencies have been working with our foreign partners, first of all, to strengthen the capacity of border checkpoints, and to improve their material and technical base. In particular, we are improving the skills of industry workers.
Drug detection is more common in border areas. In particular, we are witnessing large-scale drug seizures in the border areas with Afghanistan, neighbouring Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan,” Arabov said.
According to the head of the Centre, the number of drug crimes in Uzbekistan has been growing recently.
"In 2021, a total of 7,142 drug crimes were detected. That's up 18.4% from a year ago. The most worrying issue is that the number of young people involved in drug crimes is growing every year. In Tashkent, for example, one in two people convicted of drug offences is a young person. This is a matter of great concern, of course, ”Arabov concluded.
Uzbekistan has a number of anti-drug laws. In particular,
In February 1995, Uzbekistan acceded to the 1961, 1971 and 1988 UN Conventions on Combating Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.
The country passed the Law on Drugs and Psychotropic Substances on August 19, 1999.
In January 2021, the Law "On Prevention and Treatment of Drug Addiction" came into force.
