Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), Afghanistan's national electricity company, has signed three agreements aimed at producing a total of 240 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The agreements, which focus on solar and thermal energy production, were formalized in a ceremony attended by Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, the Political Deputy of the Prime Minister, and several officials from the Islamic Emirate.
The agreements comprise two solar energy projects, each with a capacity of 100 MW, and one agreement dedicated to generating 40 MW of electricity from coal, all of which will be developed in the capital.
During the event, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir emphasized Afghanistan's considerable potential for energy production. He stressed the necessity of attracting investments to harness the country’s domestic resources for energy generation.
"We are trying to facilitate investments in domestic energy resources and make Afghanistan self-sufficient in this regard," Mawlawi Abdul Kabir stated.
He further noted that ongoing efforts are being made to enhance energy production and achieve self-sufficiency.
Nooruddin Azizi, the acting Minister of Industry and Commerce, highlighted the approval of land distribution in 52 industrial parks by the leader of the Islamic Emirate. With approximately 800 applicants currently seeking land in these parks, he noted the critical need for electricity to support industrial growth.
"Afghanistan's industry cannot achieve self-sufficiency without sufficient energy," Azizi remarked.
He also confirmed that the laws governing industrial parks have been ratified and communicated to the private sector, paving the way for further development.
Abdul Bari Omar, CEO of Breshna Company, shared that significant progress has been made in increasing energy production from domestic resources and managing energy networks and substations over the past three years, all achieved without foreign assistance. He called on both domestic and foreign investors to explore Afghanistan’s diverse energy production potential, which includes water, wind, and thermal resources.
"We are working to improve the meter system in the near future, focusing on smart meters," Omar added.
The meeting concluded with a presentation of investment opportunities in Afghanistan's electricity sector. Graphic and video presentations were shared with representatives from Breshna Company, domestic and foreign investors, as well as United Nations representatives and donors, showcasing the potential for collaboration in Afghanistan's energy sector.
