Taliban announced the arrest of several individuals associated with the ISIS-Khorasan group during operations in Kabul, Nangarhar, and Faryab provinces on September 30. The detainees are reportedly implicated in various attacks, including an incident involving tourists in Bamiyan and multiple attacks in Kabul. The Taliban claims that the group's leader is a Tajikistani national who was allegedly planning a suicide bombing.
Further statements from the Taliban indicate that the detained individuals had received training in camps located in Mastung, Balochistan before they entered Afghanistan.
In related operations conducted in Farah and Kabul, the Taliban reported the deaths of two ISIS members, along with the arrest of several others. The exact number of those detained during these operations was not disclosed by the Taliban.
This announcement follows the Taliban's previous claims that ISIS has been effectively eliminated from Afghanistan. However, the group recently asserted responsibility for an attack on September 12 in Daikundi province, which resulted in the deaths of 14 Hazara civilians.
The Taliban's assertions regarding the militants' origins in Balochistan align with claims made by Pakistani officials, who have frequently accused Afghanistan of providing a haven for terrorist organizations, including ISIS-Khorasan, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and al-Qaeda. Additionally, concerns regarding the activity and presence of ISIS in Afghanistan have been voiced by regional powers, including Russia.
