Kazakhstan officially inaugurated its permanent representation to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal on August 26, becoming the first Central Asian nation to establish a Permanent Mission to the organization. This significant milestone comes nearly 33 years after Kazakhstan's proclamation as an independent democratic state. The opening ceremony was attended by Kazakh Transport Minister Marat Karabayev, ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano and heads of aviation authorities from various ICAO member states.
Timur Tlegenov who was appointed as the Permanent Representative to ICAO in July as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, will lead the mission. According to Kazakhastan's Ministry of Transport, this representation will bolster the country’s cooperation with ICAO particularly in enhancing civil aviation development and maintaining high standards of flight safety. In conjunction with the mission's opening, Minister Karabayev is participating in the 14th Aeronautical Conference (AN-Conf/14) in Montreal. During the conference, he met with ICAO’s leadership including President Sciacchitano and Secretary General Salazar to discuss further collaboration.
The meeting culminated in the signing of a management services agreement aimed at leveraging ICAO's expertise to support Kazakhstan’s aviation sector. The agreement outlines ICAO’s role in assisting Kazakhstan with civil aviation master planning, airport planning and ensuring compliance with international aviation standards.
The ICAO, a United Nations agency with 193 member countries is responsible for setting international air navigation principles and ensuring the safety and efficiency of global aviation.
