Kazakhstan has quickly become a major market for Egyptian fruit and vegetable products, with Egypt now leading in fresh strawberry exports to Kazakhstan, according to EastFruit.
In the 2022/23 marketing year (July-June), Egypt ranked as the third-largest supplier of fresh strawberries to Kazakhstan, exporting a total of 280 tons. This marked an increase from the previous four marketing years, where annual exports ranged from 5 to 23 tons, as noted by Yevhen Kuzin, a fruit and vegetable market analyst at EastFruit.
By the end of the 2023/24 marketing year, Egypt solidified its position as the leading exporter, shipping nearly 1,400 tons of fresh strawberries to Kazakhstan. Egypt’s share in Kazakhstan’s total imports surpassed 55%, meaning the country exported more fresh strawberries to Kazakhstan than all other nations combined.
Kuzin attributes this success to Egypt’s rapid diversification in fruit and vegetable exports and its ability to meet the growing demand for off-season products in Central Asia. Egyptian exporters have outperformed competitors from Azerbaijan and Turkey, despite their logistical advantages, within just two years.
While the EU, the Middle East, and Russia remain major importers of Egyptian fruit and vegetables, Egypt is actively seeking to expand into alternative markets. Asia presents a promising opportunity, with Egypt establishing a foothold in Southeast Asia with fresh berries and in Japan and China with frozen berries.
Asian importers will have the opportunity to explore deeper cooperation with Egyptian suppliers at the Asia Fruit Logistica exhibition in Hong Kong from September 4-6, which will include direct meetings with exporters and a special session of the Asia Fruit Congress highlighting Egypt’s prospects in the region’s fruit and vegetable market.
