Uzbekistan increased its potato imports from Kyrgyzstan in the first half of 2024, bringing in 26,500 tons —a 120% rise compared to the same period in 2022.
The monetary value of these imports surged from $1.3mn to $2.8mn, solidifying Uzbekistan as the primary buyer of Kyrgyz potatoes.
This growth in potato imports is part of a broader trend of rising fruit and vegetable imports into Uzbekistan. Over the past six months, the country has imported produce worth $237.9mn, marking a 35% increase from the previous year.
Uzbekistan is also focusing on enhancing its agricultural export potential. The country aims to boost agricultural exports to $3.5bn by 2024, with a particular emphasis on expanding the production of fruits, vegetables, and melons.
Key to this strategy is the development of infrastructure, including the establishment of 20 mobile laboratories integrated into the uzagrolab.uz platform.
Additionally, Uzbekistan has announced plans to start exporting potatoes to Aktau, Kazakhstan. In 2023, Kazakhstan saw a 70% increase in potato exports, reaching a record 411,000 tons.
