Afghanistan’s Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation has contested the International Organization for Migration (IOM) report claiming that 3.7mn individuals have returned to Afghanistan since the Islamic Emirate's resurgence. The Ministry asserts that the rate of return is higher than the emigration rate.
Human rights advocates have linked the migration of Afghans to issues such as poverty, unemployment, and instability. Ali Reza Karimi, a migration expert, indicated that migration is often driven by severe conditions, including conflict and economic distress. Many individuals seek improved security and living conditions abroad.
In Kabul, there are increasing calls for the Islamic Emirate to address local economic challenges to reduce migration. Naveedullah, a resident, highlighted the lack of employment opportunities as a primary driver of migration, stating, “The absence of work and persistent issues compel people to leave the country out of necessity.”
The IOM had earlier reported that approximately 8mn Afghans have migrated since 2020.
