Kyrgyzstan has recently completed the repatriation of 22 women and children from the al-Hol and Roj displaced persons camps in northeast Syria. This operation marks the second such return of Kyrgyz nationals this year and the sixth repatriation overall since February 2023. The United States commends Kyrgyzstan for its ongoing commitment to repatriation, which remains the most effective solution to the humanitarian and security challenges in the region.
Since early 2023, Kyrgyzstan has repatriated a total of 454 nationals, with 121 returned this year alone. This substantial effort contributes to the repatriation of nearly 228 non-Syrian or Iraqi third-country nationals who have been returned to their countries of origin in 2024. The republic continues to lead the way in repatriation efforts from northeast Syria both regionally and globally.
The U.S. will persist in supporting repatriation efforts to the Kyrgyz Republic and the subsequent rehabilitation and reintegration of its returning citizens. As of now, approximately 27,000 individuals from over 60 countries, most of whom are children under 12, remain in the al-Hol and Roj camps, facing harsh conditions. These children, in particular, deserve a chance at a better life away from these dire circumstances.
The United States expresses gratitude to international and local partners, including the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Government of Kuwait, for their collaboration in facilitating the return of displaced persons. The U.S. remains committed to assisting other nations in their repatriation efforts and is prepared to support ongoing and future operations.
