More than 60 faculty members from across Uzbekistan shared their experiences and insights gained from semester-long visits to universities in the United States, U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan reported.
These exchanges were part of the Faculty Enrichment Program, a collaborative initiative funded by the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The program was implemented by the American Councils for International Education.
Faculty exchange is a cornerstone of the cooperation between the United States and Uzbekistan. During their time in the U.S., selected faculty members engage in curriculum development, explore new teaching methodologies, deepen their expertise in their respective fields, and develop collaborative projects with their U.S. host universities.
They also serve as cultural ambassadors, sharing insights about Uzbekistan with U.S. faculty, students, and community members. Since 2019, 95 faculty members have participated in this program at 30 different U.S. universities, including prestigious institutions like Rutgers, Texas A&M, Michigan State, Purdue, and Penn State.
The recent event stressed the U.S. Embassy’s commitment to fostering long-lasting relationships between universities in Uzbekistan and the United States. These efforts aim to promote mutual understanding, deepen educational ties, and support the Ministry of Higher Education’s ongoing reforms in the higher education sector.
In addition to faculty exchange programs, representatives from Uzbek universities attended one of the largest higher education conferences in the United States this year, leading to numerous new collaborative initiatives. The U.S. Embassy also facilitated the participation of 25 American English teachers and various technical experts and scholars in projects at Uzbek universities over the past academic year.
Cooperation between U.S. universities and Uzbek institutions continues to expand, including partnerships with the “El yurt umidi” Foundation. In 2023, more than 1,000 Uzbek students were enrolled at U.S. universities – the highest number to date. Additionally, American universities have started collaborating with Uzbek universities to host American students studying abroad.
A representative from a U.S. university highlighted the mutual benefits of these exchanges:
“The visiting educators have not only benefited from the personal mentorship of American educators, but the faculty have also profited through their connections with the fellows from Uzbekistan. It has been a mutually rewarding opportunity for faculty, administrators, staff, and students.”
U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan Jonathan Henick delivered opening remarks at the gathering, stating;
“The U.S. Embassy is proud to strengthen ties between universities in Uzbekistan and the United States. Cooperation between American and Uzbek faculty will strengthen the education and research capacity in both countries for years to come.”
