The European Union (EU) has announced a financial commitment to Tajikistan, pledging $141mn in grants and concessional loans aimed at advancing key sectors of the country's economy.
This announcement follows discussions held between Tajikistan's Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Zavqi Zavqizoda, and the European External Action Service Deputy Managing Director, Luc Devigne, during the eleventh annual meeting of the EU-Tajikistan Cooperation Committee in Dushanbe on July 16.
Minister Zavqizoda outlined Tajikistan's priority sectors, which include trade, energy, industry, healthcare, education, rural development, border security, green economy initiatives, technopark establishment, digitalization, and the completion of the Roghun hydropower plant.
Zavqizoda emphasized the country's achievements in these areas and sought increased EU funding to bolster projects such as green energy initiatives, hydropower plant construction, transportation infrastructure, and enhanced border control.
In response, the EU confirmed its commitment by earmarking $141mn, with $101mn allocated as grants, to support Tajikistan's developmental goals across these critical sectors. This funding stresses the EU's dedication to fostering sustainable growth and improving governance in Tajikistan through comprehensive support in green energy, infrastructure development, and digital transformation.
The Cooperation Committee meeting, co-chaired by Deputy Minister Ahliddin Nouriddinzoda and Mr. Luc Devigne, also addressed broader bilateral relations between the EU and Tajikistan. Discussions encompassed political, socio-economic developments, as well as cooperation in areas such as water management, environmental conservation, energy security, trade, and investment.
The parties also engaged in mutual regional and international interests, including ongoing concerns related to Afghanistan and the global challenges posed by terrorism and extremism.
