A bridge spanning Khojaabad and Jalakuduk districts in the Andijan region collapsed, triggered by a powerful mudflow. The incident, confirmed by the press service of the Andijan regional administration, resulted in the blockage of traffic but fortunately caused no casualties or injuries.
Videos circulating on social media captured the dramatic moment when the bridge's supports were inundated by floodwaters, causing it to collapse under the pressure. The collapse occurred near the village of Yorkhishloq in Jalakuduq district.
Climatologist Erkin Abdulahatov suggested that the sudden and intense floodwaters, originating from neighboring Kyrgyzstan, were likely the primary cause of the bridge's failure. In Kyrgyzstan's Osh region, catastrophic floods have been reported, particularly affecting the city of Osh, following heavy rainfall.
Upon receiving reports of the collapse, a joint working group comprising officials from the regional administration and both affected districts swiftly responded to the scene. The Regional Emergency Department also dispatched rescuers to the area to manage the aftermath of the incident.
Meanwhile, around 420 individuals were evacuated from Osh due to mudflows triggered by heavy rains. The Ministry of Emergency Situations in Kyrgyzstan reported that the villages of Toloikon and Ozgur, along with the Borubai-Ata recreation zone, were significantly impacted. The mudflows swept away seven cars, with efforts ongoing to locate three missing vehicles amidst the debris.
Rescue teams, supported by police, military personnel, and medical professionals, have been mobilized to aid in the rescue and recovery operations in the affected areas.
