The leader of the Milliy Tiklanish party, Alisher Qodirov has proposed the reinstatement of the death penalty in Uzbekistan following the murder of a child in Tashkent.
Qodirov voiced his concerns on social media, stating, "The person who killed a child should not live."
His post follows the recent murders, calling for a stricter stance on severe crimes.
Referring to a recent court case, Qodirov highlighted the sentencing of a criminal who had brutally murdered a young man.
"Yesterday, a criminal who stabbed and killed a young guy 20 times declared his repentance in court and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. This 25-year-old monster will be released at the age of 42. How will he return to society?" he questioned.
Qodirov expressed his frustration over the leniency of the punishment, emphasizing the burden on society.
"It is illogical at the expense of our taxes to support a criminal turned into an animal, keep him healthy, feed him, and wait for another person to die! Society must be cleansed of such people!" he declared.
Currently, the highest penalty in Uzbekistan is life imprisonment. The death penalty was abolished in the country on January 1, 2008. Many countries are contemplating reinstating the death penalty as the highest form of punishment. Russia is one such country currently considering this measure.
