Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the need for China and Kyrgyzstan to explore innovative approaches to advance their Belt and Road cooperation, aiming to deepen and enhance its effectiveness. President Xi made these remarks during his meeting with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov ahead of the 24th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Astana.
President Xi highlighted the importance of expanding economic, trade, and investment cooperation between China and Kyrgyzstan. He stressed the need to enhance connectivity and foster collaboration on new productive forces of high quality. Xi pointed out that the two countries should leverage their complementary strengths to promote mutually beneficial cooperation and build a robust China-Kyrgyzstan community with a shared future.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Reflecting on their previous meeting in Xi'an last May, Xi noted that the fruitful talks had led to numerous consensuses on bilateral cooperation across various fields. Over the past year, these agreements have been effectively implemented, resulting in frequent positive developments in China-Kyrgyzstan cooperation. Xi reiterated China's commitment to supporting Kyrgyzstan's national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and to helping the country find a development path suited to its national conditions.
Expanding Economic and Trade Cooperation
President Xi expressed China's willingness to import more high-quality green agricultural products from Kyrgyzstan and to support Chinese enterprises in investing and doing business in the Central Asian country. He emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation in areas such as new energy vehicles and cross-border e-commerce.
Xi pointed to the significance of platforms like the Chinese Traditional Medicine Center, the Chinese Cultural Center, and the Luban Workshop in Kyrgyzstan. These institutions play a crucial role in nurturing successors for China-Kyrgyzstan friendly cooperation. Xi also underscored the importance of strengthening coordination and cooperation within the framework of the China-Central Asia mechanism and ensuring the SCO's development aligns with the common interests of all parties involved.
Kyrgyzstan’s Perspective
President Japarov recalled his visit to China in May last year, which he described as a turning moment that ushered in a new era of bilateral relations. He noted that political relations between Kyrgyzstan and China are currently at a high level, with various departments maintaining close communication and sub-national exchanges and cooperation flourishing. Bilateral trade and investment have also shown steady growth.
Japarov emphasized the rock-solid nature of Kyrgyzstan-China relations, highlighting the absence of political differences or cooperation obstacles. He reaffirmed Kyrgyzstan's adherence to the one-China principle and welcomed more Chinese enterprises to invest in the country, promising a conducive business environment. Japarov expressed hope that both sides would collaborate to advance the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project and enhance multilateral communication and collaboration within the SCO and other platforms.
