Russia’s Kama, the manufacturer behind the Atom electric vehicle, is actively exploring the possibility of setting up production facilities in Uzbekistan. CEO Igor Povarazdnyuk revealed in an interview with TASS that discussions are underway to bring the Atom electric vehicles to the local market and other Central Asian countries.
"The issue of producing Atom electric vehicles in Uzbekistan for the local market and Middle Asian countries was discussed at the meeting of presidents of Russia and Uzbekistan. We explored this idea with several partners. It turned out that the car market of Uzbekistan is very interesting: it is significant by size and about 6% of all cars sold in that country are electric vehicles," Povarazdnyuk stated.
He emphasized the promising nature of Uzbekistan's automotive market and affirmed Kama's commitment to further investigate this potential venture.
"We therefore plan to continue studying this promising area," he added.
The initiative gained momentum following discussions initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin in October 2023 during talks with Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, where the potential for local production of Atom electric vehicles was initially broached.
The move aligns with Uzbekistan's ambitions to enhance its automotive sector with sustainable technologies, marking a significant step towards integrating electric vehicles into the region's transportation landscape.
Kama, renowned for its innovative approach to electric mobility, aims to capitalize on Uzbekistan's burgeoning market and expand its footprint in the region.
Uzbekistan and Russia aim to attract $10bn in investments next year, as disclosed during the inaugural session of the Uzbekistan-Russia Council of Regions held on May 27 in Tashkent.
Currently, over 200 joint projects valued at $4bn are underway at the regional level, with an additional $5bn in new contracts prepared during the council meeting. Goals have been set to increase trade volume to $30bn in the coming years, with a focus on expanding cooperation projects across various regions actively involved in this initiative.
