Russia aims to assist Kyrgyzstan in the rehabilitation of uranium and mining tailings. The Kyrgyz Parliament's Committee on Agricultural Policy, Water Resources, Ecology, and Regional Development has reviewed and endorsed the draft legislation to ratify an agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan and the Russian Government. This agreement, signed on March 26, 2024, in Russia's Sochi, has successfully passed its initial reading.
Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations, Azamat Mambetov, outlined the core objectives of the agreement, focusing on ensuring the safety of communities residing near former uranium mining and processing sites and minimizing potential emergencies across Kyrgyzstan.
During discussions, MP Nurbek Alimbekov sought clarification on the scope of the rehabilitation efforts. Deputy Minister Mambetov confirmed plans to rehabilitate 50 out of 60 tailing dumps as part of the comprehensive strategy.
In addition to Russian support, the European Union committed €44mn to aid Central Asian nations in rehabilitating such critical sites. Kyrgyzstan is set to receive €28mn as part of this essential grant initiative.
